Volunteering

Members of the Gettysburg College Western Riding Team will be required to do 5 hours of volunteering per academic year. Below is the form for turning in hours you have completed. Also listed are two options to do volunteer work, though most other avenues will be accepted as well. If you are questioning whether an avenue will be accepted, go to the contact page and email Heather Garland.

Hoffman Homes Therapeutic Riding Center

The Gettysburg College Western Riding Team partners with Hoffman Homes Therapeutic Riding Center in Gettysburg helping youth with disabilities work with horses. It has been shown that the quiet calm presence of horses can promote healing in people mentally as well as physically. Youth with mental disabilities at Hoffman Homes come to work with the horses find the easy going atmosphere of the barn calming. Physically, youth will find that horseback riding strengthens muscles that they did not know they had promoting healing. Pictures to the left show our members, Brittany Warchol and Rachel Beiler, working with Charlie before a lesson. We cannot provide pictures of our members working with the children for privacy reasons. A link is provided below for more information on the program.

Patriots Place

We also hope to work with Patriots Place out of Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast in Gettysburg. Patriots Place hopes to work with veterans in the most current wars. They hope to provide a place of learning and relaxation to help those with mental disabilities such as PTSD and even physical disabilities caused by war. The picture to the left depicts the leader of the program, John, riding with a group of veterans and their spouses. A link is provided belwo for more information on the program.
